The Arabian Horse evolved in the deserts of North Africa, survivors of hostile elements yet revered, treasured possessions of the Bedouin. Discovered and removed to various parts of Europe, the Arabian was crossed with existing breeds, mostly larger boned varieties, founding many modern day horse breeds.
Fortunately, Arabians were also recognized for their own traits and merits. Astute horse fanciers began small pure-blooded breeding herds of which the most successful are still recognized today as the most reliable foundations. The original tribal strains were preserved, recorded and recognized by these European breeders. The next major step was made by Russia, where selected strains of several major European programs were combined to create a horse of beauty, refinement and athletic structure.
